Beyond the goals outlined above, which relate to toxicity testing and understand-
ing the responses to manufactured nanomaterials at the cellular level, there lies the
need to understand the broader ecosystem effects. For example, what are the poten-
tial impacts on primary production, decomposition, nutrient cycling and energy
fl ow and the biota that perform these vital functions. Some of this work is already
in progress and no doubt will expand our understanding of the ecotoxicological
effects of manufactured nanoparticles.
