of the building tend to be larger, but they also look out on neigh-
boring buildings (and, in some cases, the fire escape). If you don't
need a lot of room to spread out, the queen rooms (on the south side
of the building) are small but have lovely views of downtown and
plenty of natural light.

Best Western Hawthorne Terrace If you're looking for
a neighborhood inn away from the tourist hordes, this independ-
ently-owned spot fits the bill. Located in Lakeview—within walking
distance of Wrigley Field, Lake Michigan, and the Lincoln Park
walking and bike paths—the hotel is set back from busy Broadway
Avenue, thanks to a charmingly landscaped terrace (a good spot to
enjoy your complimentary continental breakfast when the weather's
nice). Inside, the relatively large rooms—decorated in standard
motel decor—won't win extra style points, but most are bright and
cheery, with spotless bathrooms (another plus: many rooms have two
windows, a bonus if you crave natural light). The ground-level exer-
cise room is especially welcoming, with large windows to let in light
and a glass-enclosed hot tub. The hotel's extremely varied clientele—
from business travelers in search of a homey environment, to diehard
baseball fans, to gay travelers in town for the annual Gay Pride
Parade—is part of its charm.
