a generous all-inclusive Russian-European lunch is offered for 300 rubles. The club is at

3 THE BAR SCENE
St. Petersburg's bar scene is less extensive than Moscow's, but it's more compact—largely
jammed up along Nevsky Prospekt—and perhaps more creative. Nevsky's bar-restaurants
are open until the wee hours, or all night. During the White Nights, the taps flow steadily
till dawn. The brewing industry has blossomed in and around St. Petersburg in recent
years, and many of the country's favorite brands are based here. Be sure to try out local
beers Tinkoff, Baltika (no. 7 is the most accessible), and Nevskoye at some point during
your stay.
Great Depression It calls itself “the bar to honor the working classes,” though it's
more popular with students and sports fans who come here to watch international soccer
matches. The bar is not at all centrally located, but if you're staying in the adjacent Ros-
siya Hotel or are visiting Victory Park across the street, it's worth a stop. 157a Moskovsky
Prospekt. & 812/371-6989. Metro: Park Pobedy.
Pivnaya Birzha (Beer Exchange) There are no set prices for beer in this friendly bar-
cafe—you bid for brew as at a stock exchange. The 15 or so beers on tap include local
brews, locally brewed international brands like Carlsberg and Heineken, and some
imports. The 90-ruble business lunch is cheap and good. Daily noon-1am. 25 Canal
Griboyedova. & 812/571-5659. Metro: Nevsky Prospekt.
Pivnaya Bochka (Beer Barrel) Russian beer on tap and basic Russian cuisine at rea-
sonable prices are the main draws here. This is a good after-dinner spot but it stays open
only until 11pm. 30 Bolshaya Pusgkarskaya. & 812/232-8760. Metro: Sportivnaya.
Prokhodimets Beerhouse This is a friendly spot for porter, lager, and unfiltered
beer in the section of town known as the Five Corners (Pyat Uglov). Its name translates
as something like “rascal.” Daily 1pm-1am. 8 Ulitsa Rubinshteina. & 812/517-1243. Metro:
Vladimirskaya.
Red Lion Its ideal location (inside the Senate building across from the Bronze Horse-
man) is reason enough to check out this British-style pub. Food is mediocre but a plate
of late-night fish and chips is hard to resist. Free admission, occasional live bands, and
periodic rounds of free champagne add to its appeal. Open daily 24 hours. 1 Decembrists
Sq. (Ploshchad Dekabristov). & 812/517-4526. Metro: Nevsky Prospekt.
Shamrock Bar Oddly, this Irish pub is the only place to get a bite to eat or drink on
the square near the Mariinsky Theater. It's cozy and friendly, and about as culturally
distant from the imperial ballet theater as you can get. There's live Irish music most
nights, and lots of beer on tap. Daily 9am-2am. 27 Ulitsa Dekabristov (Teatralnaya Sq.).
& 812/570-4625. www.shamrock.spb.ru. Metro: Sadovaya.
Tinkoff This brewery houses a lively sports bar, sushi bar, and music club, and is
among the city's most consistently popular hangouts. See review for Tinkoff restaurant
on p. 243. 7 Ulitsa Kazanskaya. & 812/718-5566. www.tinkoff.ru. Metro: Sadovaya or Sennaya
Ploshchad.
