check out his native town's thriving nightlife. Door control gets fierce after 11pm; if you
come for dinner and stay for the party you'll have no problem passing muster. 14a Pros-
pekt Dobrolyubova. & 812/320-8600. Metro: Sportivnaya.
Khrapkoff If you fancy Latin dance lessons after a day of Russian sightseeing, come
here. It's especially appealing when you want to warm up after a chilly day. The dance
lessons start at 10pm Friday and Saturday. After lessons the place turns into a mainstream
dance club, open until 6am. Other nights it's a bar (Sun-Thurs 10pm-2am). 8 Gretches-
kiy Pereulok. & 812/716-1179. www.xrapkoff.ru. Metro: Ploshchad Vosstaniya.
Magrib This cafe-club is ostensibly North African, with embroidered pillows to
lounge on and hookahs placed liberally around the hall. But people come here for the
lively dance floor and people-watching. The restaurant side is overpriced but the cafe in
front is a good place to relax before or during the party. DJs rotate and mix a blend of
trance, house, and techno. Closed Monday. 84 Nevsky Prospekt. & 812/275-7620. Cover 250
rubles women, 350 rubles men, Tues free, Wed free for women. Metro: Mayakovskaya.
Onegin Russian models and fashion designers make the clientele here among the
most beautiful in town. This club seems harder to get into than it really is. A bit of atti-
tude and persistence (and some decent togs) should be all you need to join this rarefied
crowd. Music varies widely, and starts around 11pm. Strip shows on weekends. 11 Sado-
vaya Ulitsa. & 812/571-8384. www.oneginspb.com. Cover 150 rubles after 10pm. Metro: Gostiny
Dvor.

ROCK & POP
Konyushenny Dvor A hillbilly bar with an urban edge, this bar attracts Russian
yuppies and foreign tourists who have little in common with the cowboy paraphernalia
on its walls. Its small dance floor gets packed by midnight and music is mainstream but
always dance-friendly. The balcony seats are much more fun, but watch out for the
crooked, dim stairwell if you've been sampling Russian vodka. 5 Canal Griboyedova. & 812/
315-7607. www.kondvor.ru. Cover 150 rubles after 9pm. Metro: Nevsky Prospekt.
Liverpool The Beatles had an especially devoted following in the Soviet Union, where
their music made it to the masses only through bootleg LPs and underground fan clubs.
At the Liverpool pub, live (Russian) bands play Beatles covers and other music of their
era most nights. This is a weird and worthwhile stop for any Beatles fan, with food avail-
able all day. Daily noon-1am. 16 Ulitsa Mayakovskaya. & 812/579-2054. www.liverpool.ru.
Metro: Mayakovskaya.
Money Honey/City Club One of the more democratic clubs in town, this place can
be rough and rowdy on weekend nights. Live rockabilly music is on offer nearly every
night, along with cheap beer. Closes early (11pm) on Monday. 13 Apraksin Dvor. & 812/
310-0549. www.moneyhoney.org. Cover 40 rubles for major shows. Metro: Sadovaya.
Rossi's Once you get past the scary metal dragon-bird skeleton gateway and the metal
detector, Rossi's is a lively and welcoming basement bar and music club. The low, vaulted
ceilings of exposed brick and wood beams mean the place gets smoky at night. If that's a
problem, make it an early evening stop for a beer or cocktail. 1/3 Ulitsa Zodchego Rossi.
& 812/710-4016. www.rossis.ru. Cover 150 rubles after 9pm Sun-Thurs, 300 rubles Fri-Sat.
Metro: Gostiny Dvor.
