Okhotny Ryad The shops in this mall get cheaper as you descend farther underground,
so that the bottom floor offers the best buys. It's a huge hit with young Muscovites and is
a dependable clothing source for tourists and expat shoppers, with an enormous selection

TsUM The historic Art Nouveau building flanking the Bolshoi Theater sells a broad
range of international luxury brands including Christian Dior, Gucci, and Prada, as well as
many more midrange brands. Search for good deals during massive summer and winter

FOOD
Azbuka Vkusa A gourmet paradise, this Russian chain sells French foie gras, Italian
prosciutto and other international delicacies, and a broad selection of wine at high prices
(though that doesn't matter to the glitzy Russian clientele). Some unusual Russian spirits

Eliseyevsky Gastronom An abundant collection of teas, sweets, and other Russian
goods is on display beneath the soaring ceilings of this flowery, ornate shop, which has a
100-year history of serving Russia's discriminating palates. A good source of sweet gifts,
unusual Russian tea tins, or just a stylish afternoon snack. 14 Tverskaya St. & 495/650-4643.

Sedmoi Kontinent This Russian supermarket chain is a good source of unusual tea
cookies and meringues, pickled herring and eel, and herbal liqueurs—as well as the full
range of grocery-store staples. Two prominent locations, both open 24 hours, are listed

FUR
Russia's climate and centuries-old traditions mean fur coats and hats are winter staples.
If you're comfortable with the idea, browse the unique collections at Mekha, 13 Pyatnits-

or Kuznetsky Most). You can also try Mekhovoy Salon (Fur salon) at 36/9 Novy Arbat,
where several times a year they hold trading fairs that offer a larger selection and more

be found at many outdoor markets, such as Izmailovsky (see “Great Shopping Areas”
above).
GIFTS/SOUVENIRS
The Moscow Cultural Fund (under the “Crafts” section above) and Izmailovsky Market
(under “Great Shopping Areas,” earlier in this chapter) are the best places to shop for
