Arts Bureau (Khudozhestvennoye Buro) This renowned gallery inside the New Tretya-
kov Modern Art Museum holds regular auctions for its most valuable works as well as regu-
lar sales of its icons, paintings, and other items. They will take care of any export issues for

Central House of Artists (New Tretyakov Gallery) The ground floor of Moscow's
Modern Art Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in Russia's current art scene—
either in viewing or in buying a sample. The large hall serves as a showcase for new
painters, sculptors, and craftspeople, whose works are for sale at the dozens of stalls that
crowd the space. You can also find unusual gifts and souvenirs here such as birch-wood

BOOKS
Biblio-Globus You'll find this rich and varied Russian book emporium just beneath
the computer center of the successor to the KGB. Its multilevel, packed selection includes
books in English, children's picture books, and antique books, and can suck you in for

Dom Knigi (House of Books) This landmark store is a great source of art books in
Russian and English, travel guidebooks, maps, and old lithographs. Books in English are

Moskva This big store a short walk up Tverskaya from the Kremlin offers a good
selection of art and photography books in several languages, travel books in English, a
nice history section, a decent choice of antique books, and much more. 8 Tverskaya.

Shakespeare and Co. Way off the beaten track in the basement of a residential
building, this laid-back shop has an eclectic selection of English-language novels and
guidebooks. Call in advance to ensure they are open, as hours vary. 5/7 Pervy
