INTRODUCTION
Horticultural. research. is. conducted. primarily. in. the. public. sector,. with. private.
research.institutions.playing.a.relatively.minor.role..As.a.result,.research.gaps.emerge.
between.the.basic.research.generated.by.public.institutions.and.the.applied.research.
needs.of.industry..This.gap.can.be.reduced.by.forming.public-private.partnerships.
(PPPs). that. allow. academic. researchers. access. to. commercialization. technologies.
(such.as.gene.expression.proiles.and.genome.maps).and.give.private.irms.access.to.
new.research.and.innovation.
However,. signiicant. obstacles. hinder. the. formation. of. successful. research.
partnerships..Both.parties.in.a.partnership.face.substantial.risks..These.risks.are.
rooted.in.the. conlict.between.a.university's.academic.objectives.and.the.private.
