In-Depth Information
similar, especially when they are small. Lamb's-quarters looks like a
radish at first and wild sorrel looks like spinach when it first starts to
grow. If you aren't sure what weeds look like, delay the weeding
until you see your row or the pattern of your vegetables coming up.
This is another important reason to mark the area where you have
planted your vegetable seeds.
Smoothie Garden Solution
If your vegetable garden creeps onto your lawn, put in an edging
between them. You can purchase plastic edging from most garden
centers, or you can use wood or metal as an edging. Stone is not
the best because the grass can creep in between the sections. The
edging will help prevent the grass from growing into your garden
site.
Getting on your hands and knees and pulling weeds (getting the
roots if you can) is probably the best way to get rid of weeds in your
vegetable garden. This can be time-consuming, but if you set aside
time each week to do a patch, you will be pleasantly surprised to find
that it can be easy to stay on top of them. Do not avoid weeding!
Weeding is often a gardener's downfall because weeds can grow rap-
idly, and they can take over a garden before you know it. It is
important to allot time every week all season long for your weeding.
It is often the last thing on a gardener's list, but it should be on top.
A healthy garden needs to have more veggies growing in it than
weeds. If you have missed a few weeks of weeding and some of
them have gone to seed, carefully pull out the plant and immediately
put it into a plastic garbage bag. This will prevent some of the seeds
from spreading.
