In-Depth Information
Fencing. A fence is one way of protecting your whole garden from
animals such as cats, dogs, deer, raccoons, and bears. If you live in an
area where these animals are common, investing in a good fence will
save you a lot of heartache. Different types of fencing are used for dif-
ferent types of animals.
Trellis and Staking
Some vegetable plants need support to grow and produce healthy
fruits or pods. Tomatoes and cucumbers do best if they can grow
upright so that the fruit is not lying on the ground and the plant can
receive both light and air circulation. Some varieties of peas and
beans can grow up to six feet high or more and need support. These
climbing vegetables have vines that need to be able to attach to a
structure of some sort in order to continue to grow taller.
It is important to know which plants will need staking or a trellis so
that you can put these up just before you plant the seed or set out
your transplants. If you wait, you can disturb the roots, which can
cause stress, and the vines of different plants can grow into each
other, making it difficult to place a stake or trellis without damaging
the plant.
Smoothie Garden Solution
If you have a small garden site, save space by growing a climbing
vegetable next to a plant that has a sturdier stalk. Cornstalks
make a great support for pole beans. You save space by growing
them together and you save money by not having to make a sup-
port structure.
