How deeply should the seeds be planted? Vegetable seed packets
give you valuable information, such as how deep to plant each
variety. However, if you don't have the seed packet handy, a good
rule of thumb is to plant the seed twice the depth of the size of the
seed.
When starting your seeds outdoors, make sure the conditions are
right for your specific vegetable seed. If the soil is too wet and cold
or too dry and hot, the seed may not germinate. Know what each
variety of seed you are planting requires.
Here is a quick checklist for planting your seeds directly into your
garden beds:
Make sure the soil is moist.
Mark the row using a stick, the edge of a hoe, or your finger. It should
be the depth recommended for that particular seed.
Sow the seed. If the seed is small, take a pinch of seed with your fingers
and then gently spread the seed in the area you marked. Larger seeds
can be dropped into the row. Place them an appropriate distance apart
as you go.
Cover the seed. You can gently cover the seed with soil by using your
hand or the back side of a rake.
Firm the soil down. This is done using your hand or the back of a hoe.
This prevents the soil and seed from being blown away by wind or get-
ting washed away when you water the bed.
Water the bed. Seeds need to be moist to germinate, so gently spray the
area you have just planted with water. Do not water too heavily or
