Brassicas and Root
Vegetables
Also known as the mustard or cabbage family, brassicas include
such favorites as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauli-
flower, and kale. They are cold, hardy vegetables that produce
a lot of food for the space they use. They grow well in most soil
types. Adding shredded leaves to the area where you will be
planting the following year will help to produce fabulous
brassicas for you.
Root vegetables, on the other hand, are grown for their edible
roots. They are generally easy to grow and have similar growing
needs and soil conditions. They need a well-prepared garden bed with
a light soil to grow their best. Garlic and onions are grown mainly for
their roots but have some distinctive characteristics of their own.
Broccoli
Broccoli is a cool season crop and is probably the easiest of all the
brassica family to grow. Most varieties will produce one large head
