In-Depth Information
so a nitrogen-rich soil is best. Add nitrogen-rich fertilizer such as
blood meal, alfalfa meal, or aged chicken manure during the soil pre-
paration. Lettuce plants have quite shallow roots, so you only need
to add a few inches of compost or aged manure to the garden bed.
You want the soil to be moist but well drained. Lettuce does not like
soggy or saturated soil.
Lettuce can be planted almost anywhere in your garden. It is a
fast-growing vegetable, so you get quick results. To have lettuce all
season long, start a few plants indoors in early spring. When you
transplant those out to the garden, plant more seeds. Do this every
few weeks. A great way to get the most out of your garden space is
to plant some lettuce seeds or transplants under slower-growing
vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. These larger
plants will give the lettuce plants the shade they need during the
summer months.
