the soil may not be as fertile, so the weeds do not grow as well. But
beware. In the second or third season, weeds often seem to get out
of control. Take that into consideration if you want to expand your
garden. Once you start adding compost and amendments to your
garden soil, both your veggies and your weeds will grow faster and
bigger. If you can't decide whether to expand, try growing in the
same-size area for a second season and then make your decision.

check out your local farmers' markets or roadside stands to see
what others are doing and talk to them to see how they got star-

The fall is a great time to change the size of your vegetable
garden. If you need to till a larger area, do it in the fall, adding in as
much compost and aged animal manure as you can get your hands
on. Plant a cover crop if you have time or add in some mulch to keep
the nutrients from leaching out. In the spring, you will have a fertile
garden bed ready to be planted! On the other hand, if you find you
have taken on more than you could handle, the fall is a perfect time
to plant some grass seed or perennial flowers and shrubs into the
vegetable garden beds you won't use again next year.
