Organic Versus Nonorganic
Vegetable Gardening
You've already learned the basics for growing healthy organic
vegetables. You know when and where to plant your veget-
ables, how to space out your plants, and what to feed them.
But it's worth discussing organic growing methods-and nonor-
ganic alternatives-in more detail. Organic gardening uses prac-
tices that help to restore and maintain harmony with nature,
which include feeding the soil. Nonorganic or conventional prac-
tices use chemicals and pesticides to help plants grow. In this
chapter, we will discuss the differences between growing your
vegetables organically versus nonorganically.
What Is Organic Gardening?
Gardening without using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can be
considered organic gardening. In organic gardening, the motto “feed
the soil, feed the plant” is the basis for growing your vegetables. This
