In-Depth Information
A good quality tool that is properly used and cared for can last you
several decades.
Having a sharp tool will make gardening tasks easier to accom-
plish. All tools should be regularly sharpened, but pay particular
attention to your hoe and digging tools. These should be sharpened
before you start to work in the garden. When hoeing your beds, you
may need to sharpen the hoe blade in the middle of the project,
especially if you are working in a large area.
To sharpen your tools, smoothly draw a flat file down the blade
from top to bottom. Do not go back and forth; just move the file in
one direction. File the blade until all the nicks are smoothed out.
When the blade is sharp to the touch, move the file over the back
edge of the tool to remove any buildup on that edge.
