In-Depth Information
Attaching a water wand or nozzle to the end of your hose can
make gardening easier as well. Water wands allow you to reach the
plant more easily and without straining. Buy a nozzle that has sev-
eral spray options so you can water your vegetable plants in differ-
ent ways.
Sharp Knife
A small sharp kitchen knife is one of the most flexible tools a home
gardener can have. A simple paring knife is great for opening bags of
fertilizer, cutting string, harvesting vegetables, cutting off stems of
plants for composting, cutting off diseased or pest-infected plants,
and slicing into a tomato or cucumber to eat it! Buy one just for your
garden tool kit.
Garden Gloves
Working in soil or with other organic materials can give your hands a
beating. Digging or shoveling for any length of time is a sure way to
give yourself a blister if you are doing it with bare hands. Weeding
can be hard on the fingernails and fingertips. A good pair of gloves
will help to protect your hands from all these.
Make sure the gloves you choose fit snugly but aren't too tight. If
they are too large, they will fall off every time you set a tool down.
Large gloves also make it harder to grip anything. Choose a pair of
gloves that fits well and is made with a breathable material. Buy a
couple of pairs so you'll always have a spare when one pair is in the
wash. If you are working in wet soil, rubber kitchen gloves are a
good option for keeping your hands dry.
