WHERE TO STAY
Green Gables Inn Located on a quiet, shady street, this large 1909 home,
with its three large front gables, is only a block from the Whitman College cam-
pus, which makes it a good choice if you are here on college business or to visit
your kids. Two sitting rooms downstairs are furnished with antiques and have
fireplaces at each end that make it quite cozy on a chilly evening. Guest room
names are from the topic Anne of Green Gables. Dryad's Bubble is filled with
Maxfield Parrish prints and has a claw-foot tub, while in the master suite, you'll
find a fireplace, whirlpool tub, deck, and mahogany furniture. The carriage
house easily sleeps four and has 1 1 2 bathrooms and a kitchen.

Inn at Abeja Set on a classically picturesque farm a few miles out-
side of town, this inn is surrounded by green lawns and big shade trees. The
main house's wide veranda, hammocks under the trees, and colorful perennial
gardens all add up to the quintessential farm getaway everyone imagines when
they think of running away to their own green acres. Guest rooms are in a collec-
tion of converted outbuildings, including an old summer kitchen, a bunkhouse,
and even the old chicken coop (which now has vaulted ceilings and its own
kitchen). An on-site winery makes this an ideal place to use as a base for a wine
tour of the Walla Walla area.

Marcus Whitman Hotel Originally opened in 1928, this historic high-
rise hotel in downtown Walla Walla underwent a complete restoration a few
years ago and is now the finest hotel in this corner of the state; it makes an excel-
lent base for a Walla Walla wine tour. Not only is there an excellent restaurant
and wine bar on the premises, but several others are within a few blocks of the
hotel. Guest rooms were designed with a classic elegance to match that of the
lobby, which is filled with dark wood paneling, ornate plasterwork, and lots of
original details. Most of the guest rooms are in a modern addition, so if you
absolutely must stay in the original tower, you'll have to spring for one of the
luxurious suites. Other than the suites, the best rooms are the king executives,
which are spacious and well designed.

WHERE TO DINE
For breakfast, lunch, or snacks, Merchants Ltd., 21 E. Main St. ( & 509/525-
0900 ), has long been Walla Walla's favorite downtown establishment. Basically
a huge, glorified deli, it even has live music some evenings. When it's coffee
time, try Coffee Perk, 4 S. First Ave. ( & 509/526-0636 ), a favorite downtown
espresso place. If it's pub food and microbrews you're after, then head to Mill
Creek Brew Pub, 11 S. Palouse St. ( & 509/522-2440 ).
Creek Town Cafe NORTHWEST You'll find this popular little restau-
rant 10 blocks south of downtown in a new building that has loads of modern
