Cayuse Vineyards Located just down the street from the Waterbrook
tasting room, this winery, under the direction of French winemaker Christophe
Baron, produces superb Rhone- and bordeaux-style wines, with the focus on
deliciously smooth and oaky syrah and viognier.

Patrick M. Paul Vineyards In business since 1988, this is one of the
smaller wineries in the area and produces only about 350 cases of wine per year.
They are best known for their cabernet franc, but also produce cabernet sauvi-
gnon and merlot.

left, and continue to School Ave.
Seven Hills Winery Housed in the same renovated woodworking-mill
building that also houses the Whitehouse-Crawford Restaurant, this winery
produces some excellent red wines, including merlot and syrah. Most wines are
in the $20 to $30 range.

Waterbrook Winery Although Waterbrook Winery itself is located in
nearby Lowden, the winery's tasting room is in downtown Walla Walla. The
focus here is on cabernet sauvignon and merlot in the $15 to $25 range. Whites
include chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, and the less familiar viognier, all of which
can be both quite drinkable and very reasonably priced. There are some good
values to be had here.

WEST OF WALLA WALLA
L'Ecole No. 41 Housed in a former elementary school and using children's
art on its labels, this is one of the oldest wineries in this region. This winery
started with semillon and merlot, and the semillon is still one of their best wines,
though the chardonnays and cabernet merlots are good also. The semillon tends
to be in the $15 to $20 range.

Three Rivers Winery This large winery may be the wave of the future for the
Walla Walla wine business. Housed in a large building in the middle of the Walla
Walla farm country, Three Rivers produces a wide range of wines from robust
syrahs and sangioveses to late-harvest gewürztraminer. Red wines tend to be
high in tannins and high in price.

Woodward Canyon Winery This winery is well known in the North-
west for its full-bodied red wines and vineyard-designate chardonnays and is one
of Washington's best wineries. The winery's Nelms Road red wines usually come
in at under $20 and are a particularly good value. The tasting room is in a ren-
ovated old farmhouse adjacent to the winery.
