WHERE TO DINE
IN LEAVENWORTH
For delectable baked goods, drop by the Homefires Bakery, 13013 Bayne Rd.
( & 509/548-7362; www.homefiresbakery.com), which is housed in an old log
cabin off Icicle Road near the fish hatchery. If you're craving a good espresso,
head to the Chevron station. That's right, Chevron, as in gas station. Here you'll
find Village Mercantile, 920 U.S. 2 ( & 509/548-7714 ), which not only serves
the best lattes in town but also is a great little gift shop.
Andreas Keller GERMAN Down in a keller (cellar) opposite the
gazebo on Front Street, you'll find one of Leavenworth's true German experiences.
From the waitresses shouting across the restaurant in German to the accordionist
who plays in the evening and on weekend afternoons, everything about this place
is Bavarian. Take a seat and you'll be surrounded by Gemütlichkeit. Rotisseried
chicken and wursts are the staples here, washed down with Bavarian beer. Be sure
to get something with the wine kraut; it's delicious (so is the German potato salad).
Casual and fun enough that even the kids will enjoy a meal here.
829 Front St. & 509/548-6000. www.andreaskellerrestaurant.com. Reservations recommended. Main
courses $7-$10 lunch, $7-$18 dinner. MC, V. Sun-Thurs 11am-8:30pm; Fri 11am-9pm; Sat 11am-10pm
(may close earlier in off season).
Cafe Mozart Restaurant GERMAN/CONTINENTAL Located
upstairs from the ever-popular Andreas Keller, this restaurant serves upscale Ger-
man food, as well as French and American favorites, in a refined atmosphere.
The cold-smoked Norwegian salmon and the Dungeness crab cakes make good
non-German starters. Follow this up with Wiener schnitzel or Munich-style sau-
erbraten for a gourmet German meal. Of course, Mozart is played on the stereo,
and on Friday and Saturday nights, there is live harp music.

$9-$14 lunch, $15-$35 dinner. AE, MC, V. Daily 11am- 9pm.
The Edel House INTERNATIONAL This restaurant, a simple little
house above the Wenatchee River in the center of town, is Leavenworth's pre-
mier non-Bavarian restaurant with most of the menu offerings drawing on Asian
and Mediterranean influences. There are always several pasta dishes, as well as
such substantial entrees as venison medallions with morel mushroom sauce or
roast duck with cherry confit. Sure, you'll also find a couple of Austrian or
Bavarian dishes on the menu, but this is really the place to opt for something
other than schnitzel and sauerkraut.
320 Ninth St. & 509/548-4412. www.edelhaus.com. Reservations recommended. Main courses $16-$28.
MC, V. Daily 5-9pm.

Leavenworth's Polka Spot
If you happen to find yourself in Leavenworth on one of those rare week-
ends when there is no festival going on, you can still take in some polka
music at King Ludwig's Restaurant, 921 Front St. ( & 360/548-6625 ), which
features live Bavarian music on Friday and Saturday nights.
