EXPENSIVE
Mountain Home Lodge Set 2 1 2 miles up a very steep, narrow road that is
only paved in its lower stretch, this mountain lodge is surrounded by a 20-acre
meadow and has a spectacular view of the craggy Stuart Range. In winter, the road
up here is not plowed and guests are brought to the lodge by Snowcat. At that time
of year, 40 miles of cross-country ski trails are the main attraction (cross-country
skis and snowshoes are available), but there are also guided snowmobile tours. In
summer, hiking and mountain biking are the big draws. Guest rooms vary in size
and each is individually decorated with themes that reflect the area's activities
(Mountain Trout, The Harvest, The Ranch, The Mountain View). However, The
Hide Away, atop the lodge, is the best room in the house (excluding the suite). If
you're looking to get away from it all, this is the place! During the summer, when
rates include only breakfast, gourmet lunches ($15) and dinners ($38) are available.

Sleeping Lady Although primarily a conference resort, Sleeping Lady
(the name comes from a nearby mountain) is one of the best-designed moun-
tain retreats in the state. Set on the outskirts of Leavenworth amid ponderosa
pines and granite boulders, the small resort looks much like the summer camp
it once was, with red-roofed cabins tucked amid the pines. Guest rooms are
done in a rustic contemporary style, abound in natural wood, and have high
ceilings with exposed beams. The grounds, including a meadow on the bank of
Icicle Creek, are beautifully landscaped and a delight to wander. Meals here fea-
ture produce from the resort's large organic vegetable garden, and throughout
the year, classical music performances and plays are staged. The boulder-lined
swimming pool here is one of the most memorable pools in the state.
