EXPLORING THE LOWER WENATCHEE VALLEY
As you drive east down the Wenatchee Valley from Leavenworth, you begin to
see the valley's many apple and pear orchards. In summer and fall, you can taste
the fruits of the valley at farm stands along U.S. 2. Smallwood's Harvest ( & 509/
548-4196; www.smallwoodsharvest.com), and Prey's Fruit Barn ( & 509/548-
5771; www.preysfruitbarn.com) are the biggest and best farm stands along this
stretch of road. Because apple prices have been so low in recent years, some of
the orchards have begun planting vineyards, and wineries have been proliferat-
ing in the area.
Eagle Creek Winery & Cottage, 10037 Eagle Creek Rd. ( & 509/548-
7668; www.eaglecreekwinery.com), is one of the closest wineries to Leaven-
worth and is located off Chumstick Highway about 5 miles from town. May
through October, the tasting room is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to
4pm; other months by appointment. Heading farther down the valley, you'll
come to Icicle Ridge Winery, 8977 North Rd., Peshastin ( & 509/548-7851;
www.icicleridgewinery.com), which has its tasting room in a log house in the
middle of a pear orchard. May through October, the tasting room is open
Thursday through Tuesday from 1 to 5pm; other months by appointment.
Nearby, you'll find Wedge Mountain Winery, 9534 Saunders Rd. ( & 509/
548-7068; www.wedgemountainwinery.com), which specializes in Bordeaux
varietals. September and October, the tasting room is open daily from 10am to
6pm, other months it is open Saturday, Sunday, and holidays from 10am to
6pm. Although it is only open by appointment, La Toscana Winery & Bed &
Breakfast, 9020 Foster Rd., Cashmere ( & 509/548-5448; http://communities.
msn.com/latoscana), produces the best red wines in the valley. For more infor-
mation on these and other area wineries, contact Columbia Cascade Wine &

CASHMERE: AN EARLY AMERICAN TOWN

Early American theme. The town's main attraction is the Aplets & Cotlets
Candy Factory and Country Store, 117 Mission Ave. ( & 509/782-4088;
www.libertyorchards.com), where you can tour the kitchens that produce these
unusual fruit-and-nut confections. Between April and December, the factory
and store are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5:30pm and Saturday
and Sunday from 10am to 4pm; between January and March, they're open
Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

itor Rd. ( & 509/782-4360 ), which is just off U.S. 2 in the middle of a pear
