In-Depth Information
best food in town. Crisp white linens may seem a bit out of place in this central
Washington summer-vacation town, but sometimes a bit of formality adds a
nice touch to an otherwise casual vacation. The menu includes a wide range of
traditional favorites including vichyssoise, filet mignon with a red-wine-and-
mushroom sauce, chateaubriand for two, and rock Cornish game hens. How-
ever, you'll also find some interesting, and very recommendable, game dishes
such as pheasant-hazelnut-and-cognac sausage, rabbit and duck pâté, and loin of
venison. However, just don't eat so much that you don't have room for the deli-
cious pear poached in Pinot Noir.

Deepwater Brewing & Public House AMERICAN Located just out-
side of Chelan on the road to the town of Manson, this big brewpub offers food
that's definitely a step above that served at most pubs. On top of that, there are
great views of the lake. In summer, the lake-view deck is the place to eat, but big
windows let in plenty of views also. The menu includes lots of steaks, plenty of
pasta dishes, and a handful of burgers (the fire burger is our favorite). There are
usually six of their own brews on tap. Be sure to start your meal with the brandy-
fired mushrooms.

IN STEHEKIN
The dining options in Stehekin are slim, and if you plan to stay in a cabin or
camp out, be sure to bring all the food you'll need. Otherwise, simple meals are
available at North Cascades Stehekin Lodge ( & 509/682-4494 ), which is
located right at the ferry landing in Stehekin. Note that during the winter, the
restaurant here is open for three meals a day only on weekends; weekdays, only
lunch is available. When you just have to have something sweet, you're in luck;
the Stehekin Pastry Company ( & 509/682-4677 ), which is located 2 miles up
valley from the boat landing, serves pastries and ice cream, as well as pizza and
espresso.
4 The Wenatchee Valley & Bavarian Leavenworth
108 miles E of Everett, 22 miles W of Wenatchee, 58 miles SW of Chelan
You're out for a Sunday drive through the mountains, just enjoying the views,
maybe doing a bit of hiking or cross-country skiing, when you come around a
bend and find yourself in the Bavarian Alps. Folks in lederhosen and dirndls
dance in the streets, a polka band plays the old oompah-pah, and all the build-
ings look like alpine chalets. Have you just entered the Twilight Zone? No, it's
just Leavenworth, Washington's Bavarian village.
Many an unsuspecting traveler has had just this experience, but if you're read-
ing this, you'll be prepared for the sight of a Bavarian village transported to the
middle of the Washington Cascades. Whether you think it's the most romantic
town in the state, a great place to go shopping, the perfect base for hiking and
skiing, or just another example of über -kitsch, there's no denying that Leaven-
worth makes an impression.
