Duck Brand Cantina MEXICAN/INTERNATIONAL Located right in
Winthrop in a funky old building up a flight of rickety stairs, the Duck Brand
is a casual restaurant with a big, multi-level deck that's a great spot for a meal on
a warm summer day. In cold or rainy weather you can grab a table in the small
dining room and order a plate of fajitas or ribs and a microbrew to wash it all
down. Breakfasts here are hearty, and the Duck Brand's muffins and cinnamon
rolls make great trail-side snacks.
248 Riverside Ave. (Wash. 20). & 509/996-2192. www.methownet.com/duck. Reservations recommended
in summer. Main courses $6.50-$20. AE, DC, MC, V. Summer daily 7am-10pm; winter daily 7am-9pm.
Sun Mountain Lodge NORTHWEST Although most popular with
guests at this mountaintop resort, the dining room here at Sun Mountain Lodge
offers both the best meals and the best views in the Winthrop area. Conse-
quently, whether you're staying here or not, your visit to the valley won't be com-
plete without a meal here, preferably one when the sun is shining so you can
enjoy the view. The menu changes regularly, but you might start with chicken-
curry soup or a prosciutto tart with pine nuts, Parmesan, chard, and mush-
rooms. After this you could move on to elk loin, apple wood-smoked salmon,
or rack of lamb done in a Greek marinade. Lunches, though much less expen-
sive than dinners, are almost as creative, and you might find venison chili or a
crab-cake salad on the menu.
604 Patterson Lake Rd. & 509/996-4707. Reservations recommended. Main courses $10-$16 lunch,
$24-$34 dinner. AE, DC, MC, V. Mon-Thurs 7:30-11am, 11:30am-2pm, and 5:30-8:30pm; Fri-Sat
7:30-11am, 11:30am-2pm, and 5:30-9pm; Sun 7:30am-noon and 5:30-8:30pm.
Winthrop Brewing Company AMERICAN Located in a tiny,
wedge-shaped old schoolhouse in downtown Winthrop, this local watering hole
is Winthrop's favorite gathering spot. The walls are covered with old rifles and
business cards with lipstick prints. There's a deck out back overlooking the river
and in summer, a beer garden. On Thursday and Friday nights there's usually
some kind of live music going on. The beers are some of the best (and most
unusual) in the state, and the menu is typical pub fare—pizza, burgers, fish and
chips, steaks, sandwiches, chicken, fish, and ribs.
155 Riverside Ave. & 509/996-3183. Main courses $6-$18. DISC, MC, V. Daily noon-10pm .
