Moby Dick Hotel Though it looks a bit like a big yellow bunker from
the outside, the Moby Dick is actually a comfortable bed-and-breakfast inn.
Built as a hotel back in 1930 (the year before the train stopped running), the
hotel quickly fell on hard times. Today it's a casual place, eclectically furnished
in a 1930s style. The location, up at the north end of the peninsula, is removed
from the beach strip of Seaview and Long Beach, and is convenient to Leadbet-
ter Park and its wild dunes and beaches. You'll also be within walking distance
of The Ark Restaurant (see below). Low rates, friendly atmosphere, and a tran-
quil setting make this a great choice. There is a sauna for taking off the chill, and
dinners are available in the dining room. Breakfasts often included fresh oysters
from the inn's oyster beds.

Shelburne Country Inn Despite its location in town, this inn's tone
perfectly captures that of a country inn. Step though the front door and you
enter rooms filled with a pale light that is filtered by walls of stained-glass win-
dows salvaged from an English church. In the main lobby, dark fir-paneled
walls, a big oak table, and a fire crackling on the hearth all extend a classic coun-
try welcome. Most guest rooms are on the second floor, but, on the ground
floor, there are a couple of suites that overlook the gardens and have their own
decks. All the guest rooms are filled with antiques and, even if sometimes a
bit cramped, all feel very luxurious and old-fashioned. The inn's Shoalwater
Restaurant is one of the state's finest restaurants (see below). The Shelburne also
operates the China Beach Retreat (www.chinabeachretreat.com), which is on
the waterfront in nearby Ilwaco (rooms are $179 double and the one suite is
$199).

Sunset View Resort About midway up the peninsula, you'll find this
attractive motel set back in the woods a bit, on the far side of a little bridge. Tall
fir trees and attractive gardens surround the resort, and out back, dunes stretch
for 100 yards to the beach. Although the furnishings are a bit dated, many of
the rooms come equipped with kitchens, which makes this a good choice for
families. Some rooms also have fireplaces and balconies (ask for a second-floor
room; these have the best views). Although there isn't a pool here, you'll find
plenty of other recreational amenities, including those listed below and a sauna,
a whirlpool, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoes, a playground, and a
picnic area.
P.O. Box 399, Ocean Park, WA 98640. & 800/272-9199 or 360/665-4494. Fax 360/665-6528. www.
