IN HOQUIAM
Hoquiam's Castle This stately Victorian mansion, built in 1897
by a local timber baron, is an amazing assemblage of turrets and gables, bal-
conies and bay windows. Rooms here have names inspired by the castlelike
setting (King's, Queen's, Princess's, Knight's, Maid's), and all are furnished in
luxurious Victorian style. There are antiques throughout the inn and the qual-
ity of construction of this 10,000-square-foot mansion is evident in the wood
floors and paneling, crystal chandeliers, and stained-glass windows. Guests can
enjoy the view of the city from the turret, play the piano in the parlor, and sip
tea on the front porch or sherry in the second-floor lounge. The inn even has its
own ballroom.

IN THE SOUTH BEACH AREA
The Russell House Located high on a hill at the east end of town, this
restored Victorian home was built in 1891 by a local architect. Consequently, it
abounds in interesting details, including some of the most amazing interior
woodwork you'll find in any B&B in the state. The Emerald Suite is the inn's
largest and best room and comes with a cute bathroom with a claw-foot tub and
a tiny, enclosed sun porch. Wicker furniture and a four-poster bed complete the
picture. The Rose Room, decorated with lace and shades of pink, has its private
bathroom across the hall.

Tokeland Hotel Located on the north shore of Willapa Bay, the
Tokeland Hotel has been welcoming guests since 1889 and, with its remote set-
ting and simple interior decor, feels like a genuine step back in time. Lawns sur-
round the wood-frame inn, and beyond these lies the water. The first floor is
taken up by a large open lobby and dining room, off which is a small library
with a fireplace. Up on the second floor, rooms are arranged on either side of a
long hall and have painted wood floors. Antique furnishings lend an air of
authenticity to the inn. Shared bathrooms all have claw-foot tubs. The inn's
moderately priced dining room is the most popular restaurant for miles around
and is particularly noteworthy for its Sunday dinner, which includes a delicious
cranberry pot roast (open daily 8am-8pm; winter hours vary).

CAMPGROUNDS
On Wash. 109 north of Ocean Shores are two state park campgrounds. Pacific
Beach State Park (64 campsites) is a small, exposed, and crowded patch of sand
with little to recommend it other than good razor clamming nearby. More
