In-Depth Information
Palace Hotel Located in the heart of the historic district, the Palace Hotel
occupies a building that once served as a bordello. Today Madame Marie's
suite—a big corner room with a kitchenette—is the best room in the house.
Most of the other rooms are named for former working girls. Miss Kitty's room
is as nice as the Madame's and includes a cast-iron woodstove and the best views
at the Palace. The Crow's Nest room is another interesting space, and features a
sleeping loft, nautical theme, and woodstove. Note: The hotel is up a steep flight
of stairs from the street, and some rooms are up on the third floor. The bath-
room shared by three rooms has a big claw-foot tub, so you aren't doing too
badly if you take one of these rooms.

Ravenscroft Inn Built in 1987 but designed in keeping with Port
Townsend's historic homes, this inn offers rooms with distinctively different
moods. The Mount Rainier Room, with its gorgeous views, fireplace, and
whirlpool tub for two, is a perennial favorite; as is the Fireside Room, which has
a fireplace, veranda, and four-poster bed. Two other rooms also open onto a
veranda, and some rooms on the upper levels have good views of the mountains
and water. Pretty gardens surround the house.

Inexpensive
The Belmont Built in 1885, The Belmont is the oldest waterfront restau-
rant and saloon in town, and on the second floor, you'll find four very spacious,
if not exactly luxurious, rooms. The two in back open right onto the water and
offer one of the best views in town. Exposed brick walls provide character, and
three of the rooms have loft sleeping areas. Expect some noise from the saloon
downstairs. The Belmont also rents out three suites across the street, four cot-
tages in nearby Port Hadlock, and a few vacation homes as well. Although these
rooms are definitely not for the finicky, they've got loads of character.

IN PORT LUDLOW
The Resort at Ludlow Bay Set on a tiny peninsula jutting into Ludlow
Bay, this luxurious inn is one of the finest in the Northwest and has helped the
Ludlow Bay resort community realize its dream of becoming one of the Puget
Sound waterfront destinations. The setting rivals anything in the San Juan
Islands, and the inn itself conjures up the image of a New England summer home
at the shore. Designed for romantic getaways, the guest rooms are spacious and
plush, with whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, and down-filled duvets on the beds. Best
of all, every room has a water view and from some you can see Mount Baker or
the Olympic Mountains. Breakfasts are served in a bright sun room with teak
furnishings that evoke a nautical feel, and you can get casual meals in the inn's
lounge. Additional amenities include paved walking paths through the adjacent
resort and a croquet lawn.
