period antiques. In fact, if you aren't staying here, you can still have a look dur-
ing one of the afternoon house tours ($2). Breakfast is an extravaganza that can
last all morning and will certainly make you consider skipping lunch. This B&B
is all about being pampered amid Victorian elegance.

F. W. Hastings House/Old Consulate Inn Though not quite as elabo-
rate as the Starrett Mansion, the Old Consulate Inn is another example of the
Victorian excess so wonderfully appealing today. The attention to detail and
quality craftsmanship both in the construction and the restoration of this ele-
gant mansion are evident wherever you look. Despite its heritage, however, the
Old Consulate avoids being a museum; it's a comfortable, yet elegant, place to
stay. If you're here for a special occasion, consider splurging on one of the turret
rooms. Of the other rooms, our favorite is the Parkside. For entertainment,
you'll find a grand piano, a billiards table, and a VCR, as well as stunning views
out most of the windows. A multi-course breakfast is meant to be lingered over,
so don't make any early-morning appointments. Afternoon tea, evening cordials
and dessert, and a hot tub add to the experience.

James House With an eclectic blend of antique and new furnishings,
this grand 1889 Victorian sits atop the bluff overlooking Admiralty Inlet. The
entry hall features a parquet floor and a big staircase climbing straight up to the
second floor. In the two parlors you'll find fireplaces that are the perfect gather-
ing spot on a cool evening. The views from the upper front rooms are some of
the best in town (ask for the Chintz Room, which has views and a deck, or the
Master Suite). You can even see Mount Rainier on a clear day. If you don't like
climbing stairs, opt for one of the ground-floor suites or the Gardener's Cottage.
An additional private bungalow, done in a contemporary style, is adjacent to the
James House, and has a water and mountain view.

Manresa Castle Built in 1892 by a wealthy baker, this repro-
duction of a medieval castle later became a Jesuit retreat and school. Today tradi-
tional elegance pervades Manresa Castle, and of all the hotels and B&Bs in Port
Townsend, this place offers the most historic elegance for the money. The guest
rooms have a genuine, vintage appeal that manages to avoid the contrived feel-
ing that so often sneaks into the room decor of B&Bs. The best deal in the hotel
is the tower suite during the off season. For $135 a night you get a huge room
with sweeping views from its circular seating area. An elegant lounge and dining
room further add to the Grand Hotel feel of this unusual accommodations.
