So, Who Needs Starbucks?
When it's time for coffee, drop by Batdorf & Bronson, 513 S. Capitol Way
( & 360/786-6717 ), which is located right downtown. This espresso bar
pours the best Americano (espresso topped off with hot water) in the
state. Java junkies should also be sure to stop by the Batdorf & Bronson
Tasting Room, 200 Market St. NE ( & 360/753-4057 ), which is located at
the company roastery and usually has five different coffees available to
taste (and buy by the cup or by the pound).

WHERE TO DINE
If tea is your drink of choice, don't miss the Tea Lady, 430 Washington St. SE
( & 360/786-0350 ), a shop that celebrates all things tea and always has several
different hot teas available. If it's local microbrews you're after, drop by the Fish-
bowl Brewpub, 515 Jefferson St. SE ( & 360/943-3650 ), which is very popu-
lar as an after-work gathering spot.
Budd Bay Café SEAFOOD Located in downtown Olympia, the Budd
Bay Café is the city's favorite waterfront restaurant and its lavish Sunday seafood
brunch is always popular. The views from both the dining room and large deck
take in the waters of Budd Bay as well as the state capitol. Just outside, the Per-
cival Landing Waterfront Park boardwalk stretches for 1 1 2 miles, and is ideal for
that after-dinner stroll. The menu includes such standards as seafood fettuccine,
cedar-plank salmon, and pan-fried oysters, but you'll also find good steaks and
prime rib. There are several good salads, including a delicious hot seafood salad.
Percival Landing, 525 N. Columbia St. & 360/357-6963. www.buddbaycafe.com. Reservations recom-
mended. Main courses $8-$12 lunch, $10-$25 dinner. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Mon-Thurs 11am-9pm; Fri-Sat

The Spar Cafe AMERICAN In business since 1935, this downtown diner
is a Northwest classic. On the walls hang old black-and-white photos of period
logging activities (the cafe's name refers to the spar trees that were used for rig-
ging cables and pulleys), and along one wall is the original cigar counter, which
is lined with glass-fronted humidor cabinets full of premium cigars. In back,
through a swinging door, is a dark bar, but it's the cozy old booths out front that
are the main attraction. Breakfasts here are some of the best in town (try the
Fourth Avenue Mess). If it's genuine Olympia atmosphere you're looking for,
this is the place.
