known for its large collection of art by native son Dale Chihuly, this museum
also has respectable collections of European Impressionism, Japanese woodblock
prints, and American graphic art. However, the new gallery spaces mean that the
museum can also now bring in large traveling shows. The Northwest Biennial,
held every other summer, is a juried exhibit of works by artists from Washing-
ton, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.
1701 Pacific Ave. & 253/272-4258. www.tacomaartmuseum.org. Admission $6.50 adults, $5.50 seniors
and students, free for children under 6. Free 3rd Thurs of each month. Tues-Wed and Fri-Sat 10am-5pm;
Thurs 10am-8pm; Sun noon-5pm. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and July 4.
Washington State History Museum A massive archive of Wash-
ington state history, this impressive museum is like no other history museum in
the Northwest. The museum uses a full barrage of high-tech displays to make
history both fun and interesting. From a covered wagon to a sprawling HO-scale
(3.5mm: 1 ft.) model railroad layout, a Coast Salish longhouse to a Hooverville
shack, the state's history comes alive through the use of life-size mannequins,
recorded narration, and “overheard” conversations. With loads of interactive
exhibits and several films screened daily, it's obvious that this museum is trying
to appeal to the video-game generation, but older visitors will have fun, too.
1911 Pacific Ave. & 888/238-4373 or 253/272-3500. www.wshs.org/wshm. Admission $7 adults, $6.50 sen-
iors, $5 students 6-17, free for children 5 and under. Free for all Thurs 5-8pm. Mon-Wed and Fri-Sat
10am-5pm; Thurs 10am-8pm; Sun noon-5pm. Closed New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day,
Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
