the only motel-style lodging on the island, and with its convenient location and
its outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, it makes a good choice for anyone com-
ing to the island in summer. Guest rooms are just a cut above your usual motel
room. If you're planning a longer stay, the suites, which have kitchens, might be
what you need.

Waterfall Gardens This unusual B&B is located in the middle of the
island on 5 acres of gardens and natural landscaping. A salmon and trout stream
flows through the property and has been slowly brought back to a natural state
by the inn's owners. Accommodations are in two buildings, one of which is
designed to resemble an old farmhouse and has 15-foot ceilings and a full
kitchen. However, for most people, the smaller Waterfall and Weeping Cedars
rooms should be more than adequate. Both of these rooms are quite large and
the Waterfall Room has a double whirlpool tub. Note that breakfast is not
included in the rates here, so you might want to bring along some breakfast fare
so that you don't have to leave this beautiful place too early. Also, be sure to play
a round of “bobo” golf while you're here. It's played with a golf club and a ten-
nis ball.

WHERE TO DINE
If you're heading out to one of the island's state parks and need some rustic bread
for a picnic, stop by Blackbird Bakery, 210 Winslow Way E. ( & 206/780-
1322 ), where you can also get good cookies and pastries. When you need a
steaming cup of espresso to warm and wake you, head to the Pegasus Coffee
House & Gallery, 131 Parfitt Way SW ( & 206/842-6725; www.pegasus
coffeehouse.com), which is located near the marina in Winslow. Soups, salads,
sandwiches, and pastries are also available. If you'd prefer a pint of ale in a
cozy waterfront pub, drop in at the Harbour Public House, 231 Parfitt Way
SW ( & 206/842-0969; www.harbourpub.com), which overlooks a marina
about a block away from Pegasus Coffee. This place also serves good pub food
including burgers, fish and chips, and other seafood. To find either of these lat-
ter two establishments, follow Winslow Way east through “downtown” Bain-
bridge Island and turn left onto Madison Avenue.
The Four Swallows ITALIAN/NORTHWEST Located less than a
block off Winslow Way in downtown Bainbridge Island, this casual and unpre-
tentious restaurant is housed in a restored farmhouse that was built in 1889.
Out front, under the shade trees, is a big deck for summer alfresco dining, and
inside, rustic “primitive” antiques and old, high-backed wooden booths set the
tone. The menu changes daily, but any month of the year the antipasti for two,
which showcases a wide range of seasonal specialties, makes a good starter. If you
