in quite well with the adjacent historic buildings. There's even a cashier's cage for
a front desk. Guest rooms are, however, quite modern and are tastefully tradi-
tional in their decor and furnishings. While the balcony rooms, which also have
fireplaces, are the most luxurious rooms, they really aren't worth the additional
cost since they only look out on adjacent rooftops (with the bay in the distance).
The location, amid Fairhaven's shops and restaurants—only a few blocks from
the Alaska ferry terminal—makes this one of Bellingham's best hotel choices.

Hotel Bellwether on Bellingham Bay This hotel is the centerpiece of
Squalicum Harbor, which also includes several restaurants, shops, a marina, and
grassy Zuanich Park. The marina setting served as the design theme for this
hotel, which has a distinct yacht-club feel. Dark wood paneling abounds, and a
traditional styling predominates. Guest rooms are large and have soaking tubs
(for one person), fireplaces, and balconies. The hotel's most unusual room is a
three-story “lighthouse” suite that was designed to resemble a lighthouse and has
a viewing deck on its third floor. This hotel lacks much in the way of Northwest
character and seems designed to appeal to an older and more conservative crowd
than the nearby Chrysalis.

NEARBY ACCOMMODATIONS
Resort Semiahmoo Located on 1,100 acres at the end of a long sandy
spit that reaches almost to Canada, Resort Semiahmoo is, despite the remote
location, Washington's premier golf resort and health spa. Gables and gray shin-
gles give the resort a timeless look, and throughout the classically styled interior
of the main lodge are numerous lounges overlooking the water. Artwork
abounds, with Native American and nautical themes prevailing. Not all guest
rooms have views, but those that do have beds facing out to sea. The main din-
ing room overlooks the water and offers excellent Northwest-style meals and an
extensive wine list. There's also an oyster bar and lounge in an old salmon-pack-
ing plant. In addition to amenities listed below, the resort has a marina and
paved bike and running paths. It's very popular with Canadians.
