Lakedale Resort Although best known as the island's favorite pri-
vate campground, Lakedale Resort also has six very attractive modern cabins and
a 10-room lodge that is a luxurious rendition of a classic log mountain lodge.
The cabins are attractively and individually decorated and have porches that
overlook the forest, and all have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen,
and a gas fireplace. There's a hot tub in a gazebo, and guests have access to the
resort's 82 acres, which include trails and several lakes that are good for swim-
ming, canoeing (boat rentals are also available), and trout fishing. Think of this
as a sort of summer camp for the entire family. Lots of fun and very woodsy.
Guests staying in the lodge get a continental breakfast.

Roche Harbor Village Located at the north end of the island, Roche
Harbor Village is steeped in island history, with the historic Hotel de Haro, estab-
lished in 1886, serving as the resort's centerpiece. A brick driveway and manicured
gardens provide the foreground for the white two-story hotel, which overlooks the
marina and has porches running the length of both floors. Although the rooms in
the Hotel de Haro are quite basic (all but four have shared bathrooms) and have
not been updated in years, the building has loads of atmosphere. The best accom-
modations here, however, are the four new luxury McMillin suites in a restored
home adjacent to the historic hotel. These suites are among the finest rooms on
the island. The modern condominiums are good bets for families. The resort's din-
ing room has a view of the marina, and the deck makes a great spot for a sunset
cocktail. In addition to amenities listed below, there are whale-watching cruises,
sea kayak tours, a marina, and a general store.

Moderate
Friday's Historic Inn Located right in downtown Friday Harbor only 2
blocks from the ferry landing, this small hotel is conveniently located and offers
a few affordable rooms (and even the more expensive rooms are relatively good
deals considering the generally high room rates on the island). The less expen-
sive guest rooms are small and simply furnished, with the occasional antique and
unusual driftwood headboards in some rooms. A few of the rooms have kitch-
enettes and eight have double whirlpool tubs. The best rooms are the new
ground-floor rooms, including a two-bedroom suite that's a good choice for
families. Most rooms have a TV and VCR, and many also have in-room Jacuzzi
tubs, kitchenettes, or fireplaces.
