In-Depth Information
Café Langley MEDITERRANEAN/NORTHWEST Romantic and
intimate, this restaurant seamlessly fuses Northwest and Middle Eastern flavors
and aesthetics and has long been one of Langley's most popular restaurants. The
cafe has been around for years and serves up familiar dishes such as spanakopita
and shish kebabs, but also is known for its flank steak marinated in sherry and
herbs. The prawns à la Greque are another good choice, as are the Penn Cove
mussels. The latter are available as either an appetizer or an entree. Weekly spe-
cials add yet another dimension to the reliable menu. Much less lively than the
nearby Star Bistro, Café Langley is a good bet for a romantic dinner.

The Edgecliff MEDITERRANEAN/NORTHWEST Although the cliff
on which this restaurant is built is more of a bluff, the views are still the best of
any restaurant in Langley. The food is also quite good, and the setting, up the
hill from the heart of the village, is quite tranquil. If you like oysters, then you'll
love the way they're prepared here. They're done with an unusual sesame-seed
crust and come accompanied by Thai peanut sauce. Also keep an eye out for the
butternut squash ravioli with brown butter-brandy sauce, caramelized walnuts,
roasted garlic, and fresh sage. Delicious! The restaurant has a small lounge in
case you'd like to simply enjoy the setting over a cocktail or glass of wine.

Star Bistro NORTHWEST/MEDITERRANEAN Boisterous and
boldly styled, this lively bistro is down a few doors from Café Langley and up a
flight of stairs (on the second floor of one of Langley's old commercial build-
ings). Big black-and-white floor tiles and bold splashes of color give the bistro
something of a party atmosphere. Creamy pasta dishes, flavorful salads, and
fresh seafood are all reliable choices, and in addition there are nightly specials.
Keep an eye out for the chicken with wild mushrooms and Whidbey's Port
sauce. On sunny days everyone heads out to the rooftop patio.

IN COUPEVILLE
When its time for a latte and a muffin, search out Great Times Waterfront Cof-
fee House , 12 NW Front St. ( & 360/678-5358 ), which is down a flight of
stairs on the waterfront. With its battered wooden floors and great water views,
this cozy place is the perfect place to hole up if the weather turns bad. For gour-
met picnic fare, stop by Bayleaf, 901 Grace St. ( & 360/678-6603 ).
Christopher's NORTHWEST Located in a warehouse-style building in
downtown Coupeville, Christopher's may not have any water views, but it does
serves some of the best food in town. Chef/owner Andreas Wurzrainer is from
Austria, and occasionally dishes from the home country show up on the menu.
For the most part the menu sticks to familiar fare such as shrimp scampi and
cioppino, though you'll also find dishes like barbecued salmon with raspberry
barbecue sauce. It would be foolish to pass up the Penn Cove mussels, which are
steamed with white wine, garlic, and herbs.
