manufacturing, and other business responsibilities at United Solar Systems
demand much of his time and energy; only about 25 percent of his day is
devoted to research. However, he is philosophical about the dilemma, real-
izing that even in the academic realm, non-academic responsibilities
impinge increasingly on science. He reserves Saturdays for his own projects,
to review his research and determine their direction. Much to the chagrin
of his family, he does not feel a need for vacations. He thrives most when
absorbed in his work, finding great enjoyment in the research process itself.
His creative innovations, while benefiting society and the environment,
have also given him a deep personal satisfaction that seems only to fuel his
passion for the pursuit of science.
