At present the “Backyard Biology” series is the more extensive of the
two. One set of signs deals with pollination (particularly the interactions
between plants and their pollinators) and with human allergies to wind-
borne pollen. Other signs cover butterfly gardening, Victoria water lilies,
dragonflies, web-building spiders, and squirrels and seed dispersal. 9 Near
our former wetlands exhibit (now wild) is a wildflower meadow. Extensive
graphics on migratory birds prepared by the Smithsonian's Migratory Bird
Center have been installed.
The zoo's Grasslands exhibit includes 52 species and varieties of grasses.
Two pavilions give details of the worldwide importance of grasslands, and
prairies in particular, as well as information on the major plants in the adja-
cent gardens.
AN URBAN NATURE CENTER AND A WATERWORLD
Among the new things planned for the next few years are an Urban Nature
Center and an exhibit currently referred to as Waterworld.
Intended to promote “public appreciation of the local flora and fauna in
the metropolitan area,” the Urban Nature Center will be an outdoor class-
