In-Depth Information
One has to become familiar with some of the literature resources available on
the Internet at MEDLINE and Science Citation Index. MEDLINE and Science Ci-
tation Index are search engines, which allow researchers to conduct multidiscipli-
nary broad-based, comprehensive searches that uncover relevant information they
need with respect to a particular area of interest.
MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is an
online database of indexed citations and abstracts to medical, nursing, dental, vet-
erinary, healthcare, and preclinical sciences journal articles. MEDLINE can be ac-
cessed freely through PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/). MEDLINE
is developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the U.S. National
Institutes of Health (NIH). PubMed compiles the individual databases, accesses
additional (non-MEDLINE) journals, and is accessible from any computer that can
access the World Wide Web. Please read the help screen or take the tutorial found
at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/pubmed_tutorial/m1001.html.
The Science Citation Index (SCI) was developed by the Institute for Scientific
Information and covers topics in science, medicine, agriculture, technology, and the
behavioral sciences. SCI is owned by Thompson Scientific, and can be accessed on-
line through Web of Science (http://www.lib.sfu.ca/researchtools/databases/dbofdb.
htm?DatabaseID=328) after registration or through a registered portal. SCI inter-
prets the impact that a specific article has on its field, based on the number of times
it has been cited by other articles, and the names of those articles. It also provides
a list of all references cited by a given article, and therefore a means to locate key
related articles.
Problems
1.1
Name five specialized areas of biomedical engineering.
1.2
Name four organizations related to biomedical engineering.
1.3
Perform a literature search on Medline for new concepts in blood oxygenators
this year. List five articles from different research groups.
1.4
Perform a literature search on Science Citation Index for new publications
from this year on magnetic resonance imaging. Write five sentences about the
problems they are addressing.
1.5
Visit the FDA Web site. What is the most recent FDA-approved biomedical
device? Who is the manufacturer? What does it do?
1.6
Visit five society Web sites and write when their annual meetings are. Are there
special meetings for students? List them.
