Hurdling the Language Barrier
Although many Portuguese people—especially those in the tourist trade, and in big cit-
ies—speak English, Portugal can surprise English-speaking travelers with one of the
biggest language barriers in Western Europe. Locals visibly brighten when you know and
use some key Portuguese words (see “Portuguese Survival Phrases” on here ) . Travel with
a phrase book, particularly if you want to interact with local people. You'll find that doors
open quicker and with more smiles when you can speak a few words of the language.
