In-Depth Information
Various companies do the trip; generally, several different boats run daily from March
through November (no boats Dec-Feb, seniors should ask about discounts, especially on
weekdays). Most travelers take a train or bus back to Porto from Régua on the same day
as part of a package deal. But if you want to spend the night on the Douro, it's easy to
catch a train back on your own (or buy a two-day package, which includes lodging).
The largest company, Douro Azul, has big boats that are popular with tour groups.
It's often a bit more expensive, but the service is professional and the food is good. The
trip includes a boat cruise on one leg of the journey and a return train or bus trip on the
other—which leg is which depends on the day (Porto to Régua—€59-82, Porto to Pin-
hão—€69-92, other routes offered, tel. 223-402-500, www.douroazul.com ). They also of-
fer various package itineraries that include overnights at fancy hotels and pousadas (see
their website for details).
