In-Depth Information
Note that since Porto is a business-oriented city, its hotels are often cheaper on week-
ends. In contrast, the Douro Valley—since it's primarily a tourist zone—is more crowded
(and often more expensive) on weekends. Ideally, visit Porto on the weekend and the
Douro during the week.
Drivers should make a beeline for this best part of the Douro Valley (see next section),
and explore at will. Without a car, you're limited as to where you can stay and which
quintas you can tour, but you still have enough options to make the trip worthwhile. To
maximize sightseeing thrills, take the slow boat cruise from Porto to Peso da Régua. Visit
the sights in Régua, then settle in for the night (or, if you're staying in Pinhão, take the
train or boat there). In the morning, hike to Quinta de la Rosa (near Pinhão) for the 11:00
tour and tasting. When you've had enough of the wine and rugged scenery, head back to
Porto via train.
