In-Depth Information
RestauranteAGrade is a small mom-and-pop restaurant one block up from the river.
Ferreria serves while wife Elena cooks good, home-style Portuguese food, just like mãe
used to make. The baked octopus is a favorite among regulars (€15 seafood and meat
plates; big, splittable portions; Mon-Sat 12:00-16:00 & 18:30-22:30, closed Sun, Rua de
São Nicolau 9, tel. 223-321-130, reservations smart for dinner).
OraVivaRestaurante is a humble but exuberantly decorated, long-and-skinny dining
hall a block off the waterfront. The hardworking Pinto family specializes in traditional
grilled meat and fish dishes—especially cataplana, a seafood stew. It's a little less touristy
than the Ribeira norm, with locals, decent food, and good prices (€8-10 meals, Rua Fonte
Taurina 83, tel. 222-052-033). Antonio promises a free glass of port wine (before or after
your dinner) if you show him this topic.
In Vila Nova de Gaia
(See “Vila Nova de Gaia” map, here .)
Adega E Presuntaria Transmontana serves up quality Portuguese fish and meat plates
(€13-17) as well as petiscos —Portuguese tapas—for €4-11 (daily 12:00-midnight, near
the port lodges, facing the river at Avenida Diogo Leite 80, tel. 223-758-380).
