In Sítio
To get to Sítio, take the funicular. It was originally built in 1889—the same year as the
Eiffel Tower—by the same disciple of Eiffel who built the much-loved Elevador de Santa
Justa in Lisbon. The equipment and stations, however, have been modernized. To get to
the lift, follow signs to ascensor; it goes every 15 minutes (€1.15 each way, first run at
7:15, July-Aug every 5 minutes until 22:30, then every half-hour until 2:00 in the morn-
ing; Sept-June on the quarter-hour until 21:30, then every half-hour until midnight; WCs
at each station). Upon arrival at the top, walk downhill and turn left to reach the main
square and the promontory.
