At TasquinhaD'Oliveira, Mr. Olive Tree (Manuel, who was a cook for years at O Fi-
alho) and his wife, Carolina, offer a more intimate dining experience with all the quality
of his mentor's restaurant, but less pretense. In a tiny, 14-seat abode of cooking love, they
work with a respect for Alentejo cuisine and heritage. Note that you will be brought sev-
eral plates of appetizers—if you nibble, you will pay. Most are €6-8, but the crab appet-
izer is €18. Just leave them on the table or refuse the dish (€15-25 main dishes are easily
splittable, closed Sun, reservations smart, Rua Cândido dos Reis 45, tel. 266-744-841).
AdegaTípicaBotaAlta is a charming eight-table place, worth checking out on week-
ends for their live fado music. Esperança runs “her house” with a loving passion for the
art of fado (see here for more on fado). You'll find yourself singing along with the loc-
als. Diners should arrive no later than 20:30 and finish their meals before the music starts
at 22:00, so they don't interrupt the show. You're welcome to come after dinner; you'll
pay €10 for a seat (€25-30 plates, fado music Fri-Sat 22:00-3:00 in the morning, closed in
Aug, Rua Serpa Pinto 93, tel. 968-655-166).
At BL Lounge, friendly Antonio offers a break from the traditional by serving Alen-
tejo cuisine with a modern and international twist. Try the risotto com espargos e gam-
bas (asparagus risotto with prawns), and be sure to save room for the chocolate cake,
which is muito bom (€10-20 meat and seafood plates, extensive wine list, Mon-Sat
12:30-15:00 & 19:30-22:00, closed Sun, Rua das Alcoçarias 1, near São Mamede Church,
tel. 266-771-323).
Condestável Café Bistro, a good choice for a light, inexpensive lunch or dinner,
serves soup, salads, grilled chicken, pork, and steak, as well as several vegetarian op-
tions—all under €9. Their €12 daily special includes soup, main course, drink, dessert,
and coffee (daily 9:00-24:00, just off Rua 5 do Outubro at #3 Rua Diogo Cão, tel.
266-747-314).
