Picnics: Ecomarche supermarket has a wide selection of food (daily 8:00-21:00, on
the waterfront opposite the marina, look for the blue-and-white canopy). The big market
hall two minutes beyond it has an impressive array of local fish downstairs; upstairs are
fantastic fresh fruits and vegetables, dried figs, nuts, and spicy homemade piri-piri sauce
(Mon-Sat until 13:00, closed Sun).
Lagos Connections
From Lagos by Train and Bus to: Lisbon (6 trains/day, 3.5-4 hours, transfer in Tunes
or Faro, €24; 10 buses/day, 4 hours, some transfer in Albufeira; €20), Évora (3 trains/
day, 5-6 hours, transfer in Pinhal Novo and Tunes or Faro; 3 buses/day with transfer in
Albufeira or Faro, 1 bus/day direct in summer only, 4.5-5 hours), Tavira (8 trains/day,
2.5-4 hours; 6 buses/day, 3.5-4 hours, both transfer in Faro). Confirm times locally. Train

Connecting Lagos and Sevilla, Spain, by Bus: There are four buses per day in
each direction during summer (€21, about 5.5 hours from Lagos bus station to Sevilla's
Plaza de Armas bus station, buy ticket a day or two in advance May-Oct, 2/day in
off-season). Ask the TI or a local travel agency for the latest bus schedule, or check
www.algarvebus.info or www.eva-bus.com . This is the usual schedule, but confirm it loc-
ally: Lagos 6:15 to Sevilla 11:30; Lagos 7:30 to Sevilla 14:00; Lagos 12:30 to Sevilla
17:45; Lagos 14:45 to Sevilla 21:15. From Sevilla 7:30 to Lagos 10:45; Sevilla 8:00 to
Lagos 13:00; Sevilla 13:30 to Lagos 16:45; Sevilla 16:15 to Lagos 20:45. Note that Span-
ish time is one hour ahead of Portuguese time.
FromLagostoSalema: Take a bus (every 1-2 hours, fewer on weekends, 30 minutes)
or a taxi (€25-30, 20 minutes); see “Orientation to Salema” on here for details. In Lagos,
to get to the bus station from the train station (ignore the “ quartos women” who tell you
Salema is 40 miles away), walk left out of the train station, go through the pink strip mall,
cross the arched pedestrian bridge and then the main boulevard, and angle right over to the
white-and-yellow EVA bus station (bus info: tel. 289-899-760 or 282-762-944, www.eva-
bus.com ). Before heading to Salema, pick up return bus schedules and train schedules for
your next destination (though as a fallback, Salema Property and Services in Salema has
posted schedules, or check www.algarvebus.info ) .

Straddling a river, with a lively park, chatty locals, and boats that share its waterfront cen-
ter, Tavira (TAH-vih-rah) is a low-rise, easygoing alternative to the other more aggressive
