long time in a traditional copper pot (somewhere between a pressure cooker and a steam-
er). Also look for grilled golden bream (dourada grelhada) and giant prawns (camarãos) .
Salema has seven or so places that all serve fine €11 meals. Happily, those that face
the beach (the first three listed here) are the most fun and have the best service, food, and
atmosphere. For a memorable last course at any of these places, consider taking your mo-
scatel (dessert wine), caipirinha (Brazilian sugarcane liquor mixed with lime), or coffee
to the beach for some stardust on the side.
The BoiaBarandRestaurant, at the base of the residential street, has a classy beach-
front setting, noteworthy service by a friendly gang, and a knack for doing whitefish just
right (always with free seconds on good orange and green vegetables). Their vegetarian
lasagna (€10.50) and salads are popular, as are their €8 breakfasts (daily 10:00-24:00, tel.
282-695-382).
The Atlântico —noisy, big, busy, and right on the beach—has long dominated the
Salema beach scene. It's known for tasty fish (especially swordfish), friendly service, and
a wonderful beachside terrace (daily 12:00-24:00, serving until 22:00, also rents lounge
chairs and bamboo sunshades, accepts credit cards, tel. 282-695-142).
The intimate MiraMar, farther up the residential street, is a last vestige of old Salema.
Florentine and Dieter offer a creative rotating menu for those venturing away from sea-
food. Their €10 tapas plate—a hearty array of cold meats, veggies, and munchies—can
make a meal. Their caldeirada is a delightful Portuguese fish-and-veggie stew, but be
forewarned—portions are large (Sun-Fri 12:30-16:00 & 18:30-22:30, closed Sat, cash
only).
Casa Pizza, across the street from the Boia Bar, isn't on the beach, but its upper
deck has a great view. It serves a variety of tasty €7-10 pizzas, salads, and fresh fish,
as well as €8-15 meat and pasta dishes (daily 10:00-24:00, Rua dos Pescadores 100, tel.
282-697-968). Get a pizza to go, and eat it on the beach for the best view in town.
BistroCentral —on the town square and open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—offers
a rotating, international menu. Bertrand runs the restaurant while Marc and Natalia cook
up a variety of €7-25 fish, meat, pasta, and vegetarian dishes (€8 daily specials, good wine
list, homemade desserts, Tue-Sun 9:00-24:00, closed Mon, mobile 934-194-215).
Restaurante O Lourenço, a block up the hill, has no ambience or view but offers
good-value meals, has a local clientele, and is the place for cataplana (€30 for 2 people).
Paulo serves, while his mother Aldina cooks (€7.50 fixed-price meal, fresh but expensive
“catch-of-the-day” platter around €35—ask price before ordering, Mon-Sat 10:00-23:30,
closed Sun, cash only; from Hotel Residencial Salema cross the bridge, restaurant is a
half-block uphill on your left; tel. 282-698-622).
