Cascais and Estoril
Before the rise of the Algarve, these towns were the haunt of Portugal's rich and beautiful.
Today, they are quietly elegant, with noble old buildings, beachfront promenades, a bull-
ring, a casino, and more fame than they deserve. Cascais (see photo) is the more enjoyable
of the two; it's not as rich and stuffy, and it has the cozy touch of a fishing village, great
seafood, and a younger, less pretentious atmosphere ( Cascais TI Mon-Sat 9:00-19:00,
Sun 10:00-18:00, Visconde de Luz 14, tel. 214-868-204, www.cascais.net ) . The Estoril
TI is at Areada do Parque (same hours as Cascais TI, tel. 214-663-813). Both are a simple
day trip from Lisbon (4 trains/hour, 30 minutes from Lisbon's Cais do Sodré Station).
Bullfight fans could enjoy a bullfight—if one is scheduled—in either city (ask at the TI).
