Diurnal (day-active) lemurs are the largest and easiest to identify. They are usually
foundingroupsofbetweenthreeand12individuals.Inmanyoftheisland'srenowned
wildlife locations two or more species can been seen relatively easily.
RING-TAILED LEMUR ( Lemur catta ) Instantly recognisable by its banded tail.
More terrestrial than other lemurs and lives in troops of up to 20 animals in the south
andsouthwest,notablyinIsalo,AndohahelaandAndringitraNationalParks,andBer-
enty Reserve.
Ring-tailed lemur
RUFFEDLEMURS (genus Varecia ) Large lemurs commonly found in zoos but dif-
ficult to see in the wild. There are two species and both live in eastern rainforests:
black-and-white ruffed lemur is found sporadically in pristine areas and can some-
times be seen in Mantadia and Ranomafana National Parks, and on Nosy Mangabe,
while the red ruffed lemur is restricted to Masoala.
