Kiev. ( YEVTUSHENKO 's famous poem of the same
name drew from Kuznetsov's original account.)
Heavily censored by the authorities, Kuznetsov
began to consider emigration. At the height of
his popularity among Soviet youth, he sought
political asylum in 1969, while on a trip to Lon-
don to research LENIN 's life in Britain. An uncen-
sored translation of Babi Yar was published in
the West to great acclaim soon after, but Kuz-
netsov was unable to otherwise replicate his pre-
vious literary success. Instead he worked for
Radio Liberty and gained a wide Soviet audience
through broadcasts that appealed to listeners
through their style, wit, and honesty. He died in
London of heart failure, a month after the birth
of his daughter.
