affair, he was never Stalin's man. His death in
July 1926 opened the way for a more pliable,
pro-Stalin head of the political police. During the
rest of the Soviet era, the regime promoted
Dzerzhinsky as “Iron Felix,” the symbol of incor-
ruptible, ruthless Soviet power. His statue stood
in front of KGB headquarters until after the failed
AUGUST COUP OF 1991 , when it was removed to a
sculpture park near the Moscow River.
