broke out, this time between the Czechs and
local Bolshevik troops. Better armed and orga-
nized, the Czechs gradually came to control most
of Siberia along the Trans-Siberian Railroad.
They now actively sided with Admiral KOLCHAK 's
White government based in the town of Omsk.
The Czech presence in Russia, accidental as it
was, was also part of a broader foreign interven-
tion in Russian affairs during the civil war. From
1918 to 1920, soldiers from 14 countries, primar-
ily Great Britain, France, the United States, and
Japan, landed on Russian territory, with the
Japanese staying in the Russian Far East until
1922. The Czech Legion completed its evacuation
in the spring of 1920, by which time the Bolshe-
viks were on their way to winning the civil war.
