Geology Reference
In-Depth Information
Humans are the first organisms to thrive on earth by actively shaping it to suit their
needs. I describe how humans redirect rivers, move mountains, and build beaches.
These and other processes used to be the domain of geologic forces, but now, humans
are themselves a force of geology to be reckoned with.
In the last pages of this topic I briely describe the most common ways geology destroys
human endeavors and sometimes takes human lives. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsuna-
mis are mentioned, along with lesser-known hazards such as erosion, jokulhlaups, and
lahars.
